Perfect 40mW Laser

Benjamin Moon - 31st December 2009

Read a few laser forums to find out where I could get a good green laser pointer that wasn't a Chinese 5mw waste of money. Decided to go with Optotronics.com and I made the right decision. I got the 40mw green laser pointer and it is basically a light saber. I use it for astronomy to point stars out to people, and the beam is visible all the way to the star. It's perfect. Don't waste your money on cheapo green lasers. Go with a quality one. Highly recommend the 40mw.

No Comparison to the cheapies

John S - 15th September 2010

This is the real deal. It is fantastic for pointing out stars, even in moderately light polluted areas. Delivery was swift, quality is high, performance is top notch.

Great Product

Kurt - 13th November 2013

I've had this laser for about a week and I honestly have no complaints about its performance. The beam is visible at night and even in dimly lit rooms. I highly recommend this laser: it's a good balance between having too much power that you can't use it recreationally and not being able to see the beam very well.

However, the laser came in a very cheap box with slots for batteries but no batteries, but I don't even care when I use the laser because the laser itself is quality.

Also, this site has great customer service.

40mW Premium Green Pointer Review

Matthew Mohr - 16th February 2015

I purchased the 40mW Premium Green Pointer last week, at a cost of $80.00USD. For the quality of the laser, I can honestly say that I expected a lot more money out of my pocket, but, that is simply not the case! The quality, the craftsmanship, the reliability of the laser, everything is amazing, and, everything I would expect in a premium advertised product.

I purchased this laser, not for astronomy, or for presentations, or for pointing at aircraft(though, I concede I have already used it to point out our neighborhood Jovian planets to my relatives, when they had trouble looking!). I didn't even purchase it for testing, leveling, or anything else of the like. I purchased this laser for my half-blind, 19-year old cat, who just happens to go absolutely ballistic over lasers. The poor girl was getting depressed, due to her blindness, and, I turned to the one thing I knew would cheer her up. I was not disappointed in my purchase! The laser is dazzlingly bright, perfect for my little girl to be able to see clearly, even in broad-daylight outside, and since it arrived and I installed the batteries, she has been happy as can be. The 40mW beam is amazingly bright, even bright enough to be clearly visible through Rayleigh scattering in a purified air chamber--let alone the scintillation from dust particles-- that it can be seen clearly from a user angle at Mid-day. The pencil-beam is the sharpest, and most accurately oriented, beam I have EVER seen in a laser pen, and at night the beam seems to just keep going, to infinity and beyond.

The price is amazing. 80 bucks? I expected to pay 100 for something like this, I feel like I was stealing it. It's sturdy, rock solid(already dropped it once, carpet mind you, and if anything it is a bit brighter!), and has a comfortable weight. The button is delightfully light to press, and the AAA cells are dirt cheap for the fun I get with my cat. Of course, no quality product is without it's detractors, but, I have yet to find anything seriously wrong with it. The output does vary, at times, with the beam getting dim and then bright, however, after a few cycles to warm it up*, it's shining bright as ever without a hiccup.
The box it came in, I actually like it. Other people complain about it, but, I paid for a fancy laser, not a fancy box. I put the laser back in the box on my dresser every time I finish with it, and even take the batteries** out.

Tl;DR version: Amazing laser. Great quality, excellent price, I would definitely recommend this to a friend. I look forward to purchasing any future laser products I may desire, or want of, from Optotronics from now on.

*I have found that the laser has a slight warm-up duty cycle if left to sit un-powered for several hours. I have determined that a cycle of 20s on, followed by 5s off, about 3 or 4 times, gets the laser ready and it doesn't fluctuate much after that.

** The website does say to use Alkaline batters, however, I've already found out that standard Pile Alkaline batteries tend to create fluctuations in the laser's output. My recommendation is NiMH rechargeable secondary-cell batteries. Or Li-Ion, if you can get your hands on the right size. The energy output from the batteries are significantly more uniform than the Alkaline.

40 mw green laser

jerry finn - 16th January 2009

Placed order on Saturday night. Order was shipped on Monday and received on Wednesday! The laser was tested prior to shipping and reported to be 42mw_ I believe it- it is VERY bright. Have not had a chance to check divergence, yet. Thanks for the great response.

Great product!

Francesco Buonfiglioli - 07th May 2014

This is my first >5mW green laser and I'm very impressed! Great quality laser, good service and fast delivery!
Sure I'm going to talk of your products to mine friends and relatives!
In the future, if I'll have to buy a new laser, I will do business with you again surely!

PS: The only one little bad thing is the case, because it doesn't have a clip to maintain it close...but this isn't a big problem!!
